Until this River Dries

June 2002

A river wide
A river violent
A river shallows
It is a river filled with the debris of our hate and pain
A river smelling with the foulness of our sins and crimes

It is a river that sings to us songs of our past
With lyrics of woeful evidence of our madness, deception and shame
It is a river that brings us dire warnings for tomorrow
Warnings of what destruction our greed can bring

It is a river dark, suspicious and ironically calm
Quietly flowing with the current of our want for revenge
It is a river that widens with our deceits and lies
A river that strives on the blood of our innocent families and friends

Until this river’s height sinks to levels that reveal the true power of democracy
When our legislators and judges are no longer puppets of a corrupt regime
Until the voice of the press can be heard without restrictions
Until it’s mass clears to reveal the riches of our land, hidden deep
Exposing the thugs and thieves who strive on our people’s suffering

Until this river dries, our fear will not die
Until this river dries, our joy will not return
Until this river dries, peace will elude us
Our hurts will not go away
No, No, No, We will not know peace or calm
Until this river dries
