Dear MR. PRESIDENT, by Jennifer

2009

Thanks to you, I am not hesitant
to proclaim to all who’ll read this that I’m a PROUD American resident.

I am proud and overwhelmed as tears have filled my ‘lids.
You told us “Yes We Can”,
We believed you,
You were right,
WE DID!

Your Audacity to Hope has become somewhat contagious.
I now see people chasing dreams that had once seemed so outrageous.
Dreams are leaving cages and they’re dressing up in suits.
People no longer despise humble beginnings (a.k.a. GRASS ROOTS).
Black, Latino & Asian
children now do see
that there truly is no limitation
to what they THINK they can be.

And although our stage is set with economic stress,
and although there are dangers that may lead us to unrest.
Yes,
America’s in her toughest time. We are taking our hardest test.
Yet,
You’re invited us to embark on a quest
to overcome this mess…simply by giving our best.
That simply cannot be.
Because you’re unique brand of patriotism has made a better man of me. Before I pronounced your name, I really had no interest in participating in a political game that was ineffective, self-serving & senseless.

But you’ve opened up our senses and taught us to appreciateThe fibers of this country that once made us so great.

Now We Can Integrate,
We Can Reconciliate
Black, White…red, blue…old, young…
We will dictate our fate!
OUR future—
begins in this present that we’re in.
And OUR children—
will not inherit the consequences of our sin.
Sins like:
Prospering CEOs while the middle class is denied
Or
Comforting another mother as a soldier unnecessarily dies
Or
Charging two arms and one leg to heal an infected fingernail Or
poor education system that sets our children up to fail!
Mr. President,
May God grace you to lead.
And may God grace us to follow.
Not just today when the excitement is great,
But tomorrow, Next year, next term…all the way to year eight.

Change requires sacrifice
Which can bring discomfort and pain.
But if we endure short pain, we will reap the long-term gain.
If we outlast the rain, the sun will shine again.
There is nothing we can’t do when we unite our minds again.
We commit to pray that God will keep your family safe.
AND
We commit to pray that God will lead you by his grace.
AND
We commit to pray that God keeps your focus pure.
AND
We commit to pray that He gives you strength that will endure.
Mr. President, please take comfort when you feel the world’s weight on you.
It is the prayers of families like ours that will avail to get you through.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR AUDACITY, MR. PRESIDENT.
