Ethiopian Diaspora, by Mahlet Yared

Spring 2008

We are castaways, broken links of our generation
Uprooted from our foundation
Scattered seeds amongst a sea of amalgamation

Lost souls, sailing adrift with no destination
Seeking refuge In the ports of alienation
Finding solace In the shores of assimilation

We are islands of isolation - Engulfed By fear and trepidation
Battered by waves of submission - Dwindling sands of emotion
Trapped In iron cells of Corruption - Tortured by mental erosion
Prisoners of a psychic dimension

Infused By a present state of infraction
Wracked By memories of childhood jubilation
Enemies of time and transformation
Longing for Emancipation

Breaking free from such anger and disaffection
Appeasing the mind of diversion - Consoling the heart of seclusion
Requires a shift in direction - A new course to redemption

Alas, we return to our humble creation
Standing tall amongst our kin and population
We close the chapter on this tragic narration
And learn to invest in our rightful nation

Give back to the source of our formation
Rebuild the trust thru economic foundation
Building bridges to mend our frustration
We owe it to ourselves to seek our re-integration
To form new bonds beyond holiday celebrations

To cultivate the soil that will fend off starvation
To saturate the markets with ideas and inventions
To educate our young - arm them with imagination
To eradicate the evils cementing our dire position
That of AIDS, poverty, ethnic wars and corruption
We must answer the call and lift up our nation

A new breed of warriors with the mightiest conviction
That of sharing our wealth and intellectual possession

Winning the war of wills with patriotism & compassion
We are agents of change to be remembered for generations
A hero’s welcome and esteemed position is not the motivation
For the greatest story of adventures and foreign expeditions
Concludes with a journey Home to fulfill one’s life’s expectations
